Being passionate and involved in the community of non-profits proved be a successful endeavor for three fortunate non-profits that benefited from our giving events that began in 2018. The active members of the 100+ Women Who Care Evansville IN continue to be a mighty force of women as we have now given over $30,000.00 in monetary gifts to our community.

On January 22nd it was very obvious that Autism Evansville, Gilda’s Club and Ozanam Family Shelter were all worthy recipients of the generous gift but Ozanam Family Shelter’s message spoke to the hearts of the ladies who spent the evening at Acropolis was awarded the $10,000.00 check. While one may have an idea who she wants to vote on, before the meeting, ten minutes from each organization can make a difference in the decision.

I believe one cannot fully capture the importance of our gift unless she takes a short time out of her busy life to sit in that room full of women and listen to each non-profit share for ten short minutes. Giving $10,000 in a 2-hour period to a deserving non-profit is very satisfying and we leave content and with hearts brimming over with love. 100% of our gift goes directly to the non-profit. There are no admin fees, event fees, or other fees to reduce the impact!

A recap of our meeting and we learned about the nominated non-profit during our giving meeting...

Ozanam Family Shelter won our vote when the team shared what the impact such a gift would provide. The case workers/staff wear many hats and make it their mission to help those in need to get on their feet. Their case managers go over and above to help in areas that felt hopeless by allowing those using their services to see that they are surrounded by people who are capable of working miracles. The staff at Ozanam is its biggest asset because they fall in love with the people they are serving. They currently have 17 family rooms that allow members of a family to stay together and not be separated, they have 9 single beds for women and serve 3 meals a day 365 days a year. They turn people away daily with the typical stay being 45 days and are always at capacity. This gift will help to ease the financial burden of their yearly budget but most importantly it is a testimony to what women who care can do in making a difference in the lives of people who need our help. One of the ladies sitting in the room stated that Ozanam helped her at one time. It was obvious she was grateful to be able to give and support this non-profit through her generous donation.

Officer Jason Cullum, with Cops Connecting, was excited to share that this is the first year their children get to fly instead of using busses for transport. Our $10,000.00 gift from the October 2018 giving meeting sponsored everything needed for 10 students to have a Disney experience in April 2019! Check out the Facebook page: cops connecting with kids disney adventure if you are interested in following this group during their time at Disney World.

Autism Evansville shared that their goal to advocate for families who have a child with autism. The CDC states that 1 in 59 children will be diagnosed with autism and Autism Evansville is the only non-profit that services six counties in the tri-state area. Since 2009 they have served 2000 people and their mission is to offer a place of acceptance and support to the families at no charge. They put on family fun nights at various locations to give families a chance to relax in a safe environment free of judgement. They have a voucher program provided at no cost that gives access to services that kids may not typically receive. To date they have given out $22,600.00 in vouchers to 39 local families. Autism Evansville has served 634 families through their program. Autism Evansville received $500.00 during our giving event and that is exactly what it costs to cover one family fun night. Their big fundraiser for the year and another chance to help is the Autism Evansville Walk & 5k on Saturday April 27, 2019.

Gilda’s Club returned for a 3rd time and walked away with a check for $500.00. Gilda’s Club opened its doors 5 years ago and is staffed by individuals that know exactly what a person with cancer is going through. Imagine if you were to hear “you have cancer”, Gilda’s Club will be there to help people turn their tears to smiles and their smiles to laughter and connect people with resources. There are currently over 700 plus members who don’t have to feel alone and are able to share life with those who care. Gilda’s Club allows those with cancer to feel like a normal person despite their cancer diagnosis.

Not all people are created with a giving mind set but every person that said yes to this group wants make a difference and are using financial resources to do such a thing. Being kind takes very little effort and having a generous heart is testimony to what a difference being a giver produces. Mother Teresa says it best “Faith in action is LOVE-and love in action is SERVICE.” I will leave you with my favorite Mother Teresa poem that hangs in my office as a valuable reminder to “Do It Anyway.”

(The version found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta)
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
-this version is credited to Mother Teresa

As I reflect on our 2nd event at Sauced, I would like to express sincere gratitude to those who said “YES” to this beautiful adventure. What has happened at our events has made the kind of difference that is amazing to be a part of and bear witness to. Cops Connecting with Kids was the grand winner for this event but honestly, all the non-profits we have been blessed to hear from are winning because even though they may not receive the $10,000.00 they bring awareness to their non-profit. Hearts are being touched, eyes are being opened, and seeds of knowledge and need are being planted and who truly knows how far and wide this will reach!

Cops Connecting with Kids began their journey in September of 2013 to raise funds to send kids, that would never have the ability to go, to Disney World. This gives them core life experiences that will stay with them throughout their lives and gives the ability to place trust in people who will become their friends and protectors. Initially this was supposed to be a one-time trip, but it was too important to stop so they kept fundraising to make the dreams of children come true. In 2015 it started with 26 children…in 2019 there will be 64 children heading to Disney World and our gift of $10,000.00 will help 10 kiddos get there and take the fundraising burden away just a bit. Every portion of this endeavor is community funded and volunteer driven. A quote by Walt Disney himself says it all, “If you can dream it, you can do it."

Gilda’s Club simply wants to be there for any person whose life has been affected by cancer, especially when there are currently 6000 people on survivor care plans. Gilda’s Club knows exactly what people affected by cancer are going through and educates and empowers individuals to return to their life and their new normal. Gilda’s is 100% supported by donors with 700 members being served in the first 5 years. Gilda’s exists so that no one faces cancer alone.

Patchwork Central is helping families within the community to stretch fixed incomes by offering services such as an after-school program, showers, a food pantry, hot cups of coffee, and bicycles for people in need. Their presence is essential in their neighborhood and their work offers a sense of community and belonging. Celebrating successes and mournful losses are just one part of what they do. Volunteers are critical and become family by helping people and supporting one another daily!

As I was reflecting and contemplating what I would blog about, my thoughts were drawn to the words “10,000 reasons”. I encourage you to reach out to your friends and family and share what this opportunity to give back means to you. This thought prompted me to write the poem below about what I have witnessed at each event thus far. As time passes I feel certain our paths will cross in a variety of ways due to the fact that as women we tend to be movers and shakers and can rally people to share in the needs of our community. I hope this group truly understands what power there is in unity and sharing resources and always remembers that being a blessing to others and sharing in the goodness of your life will come back around when least expected. I am humbled to be a part of such game changer for others and I ask you to always remember that you were made for greatness and what happens each time we meet is a living example of such greatness and may our light burn bright for the world to see!

I believe many of our members share the same sentiments and will continue to gather to make a difference together each quarter!

10,000 Reasons by Melissa Zint

One hundred plus amazing women who care, Joining forces-a hundred dollars each to share.
A room full of women from all walks of life, She might be a friend, a mother, a sister-a wife.
A community of giving-the only motive in mind, The joy of helping another-the desire to be kind.
At a place in our lives with our resources to give, Passing along a blessing-a gift helping one live.
Ten thousand reasons what a difference we can make, Non-profit nominations-community awareness at stake.
Ten short little minutes presenting heart and soul, Being part of a solution-ten thousand reasons is the goal. At a bare minimum I believe this is where it all starts, As we walk away content with satisfaction in our hearts.
We may never know the fullness of what we give, Our daily actions are the reflection of the life we live.
Love is the foundation-with purpose and demand, Ten thousand reasons the mission on solid ground we stand.

Tuesday, July 24, 2018: Giving Meeting

6:30 pm - 7:30 pm at The Red Fez

Blog Credit: Tanya Pulliam and Stacey Stratman

Tuesday evening, July 24th, 2018, we held the first meeting of the newly formed group, 100+ Women Who Care Evansville IN a the Red Fez Restaurant downtown. As we all know it is hard work when tackling a new project or beginning a new endeavor. There were many times we wondered can we do this? or will other women get involved? The answer to both was a resounding YES. We could do this. We could do it because of these women. Because of their devotion to the greater good. We can do this and more because of these women.

How did it go, you ask? Well we didn’t know what to expect going into Tuesday’s event. We knew we were ready but the energy and excitement was deafening and beyond our expectations. The team at Red Fez team treated us wonderfully! We are women and we love to talk. When we have a passion we love to talk more. And boy were we passionate on Tuesday!

We heard from three amazing women who have dedicated their time to making lives better every day.

Suzanne Draper told us about her experience in adoption and the impact it had on her in her life and career. She was fortunate to be matched with amazing parents who helped her see and achieve her passion in helping children who don’t have advocates. Vanderburgh County CASA is just that – a group of advocates who ensure these children have a voice and aren’t moving alone through the court system. Our children are our greatest treasure and CASA helps guide them to a brighter future.

Melanie Atwood spoke about the members and visitors of Gilda’s Club of Evansville. Their services provide hope and support to more than just patients – they are for their friends and family too. She explained the impact on these visitors and how they all become members of one large family. Gilda’s Club is a sanctuary of hope and love for those impacted by cancer. As their mission states ‘so nobody faces cancer alone’, it was evident that anyone who enters the red doors won’t ever be alone.

Kristie Byrns shared the story of Albion Fellows Bacon Center and how it has been a part of Evansville for over 100 years. Their services help families who have been victims of domestic or sexual violence. These are women and children who often don’t have anywhere to turn and are fighting for their lives. The shelter is just the beginning for those who come to Albion Fellows Bacon Center as they also offer support to assist in getting their client’s lives back on track.

We listened to these amazing stories and saw the driving force behind the organizations. The ballots were placed on the tables for each of us to vote and believe me, it was tough! We had to choose which group was most deserving of our $10,000 donation this quarter. How do you decide such a thing when we all know how incredible the need is for all of them? Staring at the little pink ballot we all marked our choice for the evening and the counting began…

Holy cow it was a close count! Our team checked it twice and single digits separated these wonderful groups. It was decided that the recipient of the first 100+ Women Who Care donation would be:

ALBION FELLOWS BACON CENTER

We gave $10,000 to support those women and children in their time of need but since we are 100 Women PLUS, we also got to give an additional $350 to the other groups, CASA and Gilda’s Club of Evansville. WOW!!

Smiles, handshakes, hugs, laughter, tears, and joy filled the room and our hearts. Many entered that evening not knowing anyone but we left the room with a full heart and a few more friends.

One of the quotes from the night was from Jim Kelly, “Make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow.”

Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little: together we can do so much.” That’s just what we did, was we came together to do much more than any of us could have done alone. I think we can all rest assured we made a difference on Tuesday and we’re going to continue to make a difference. Why? Because we are 100+ Women who Care Evansville, IN.
